    The Guild's Youth Program

It is the mission of the Greenville Woodworkers Guild to provide a safe learning and working environment in a dedicated area of the Education Center for use of the youth program participants.  The program will provide developmentally appropriate practices and activities in which young woodworkers can work  to develop skills and construct projects that exemplify an age appropriate understanding  of woodworking and assist in the promotion of the physical, cognitive, social and creative development of the young woodworker as it relates to woodworking.

Parents must complete a Registration Consent Form and Liability Release Form.

All participants must adhere to all Rules and Regulations of the Greenville Woodworkers Guild and the Youth Program.

Cell phones and other electronic devices must be on mute or turned off during classes.


  Teen Woodworkers Program
Ages 13-17
(Age 12 after discussion with instructor and assessment of maturity of student.)
Duration: 12 Weeks
 
Group 1 - Intro to Woodworking with Hand Tools and Lathe
   
Project  Construction of wooden boat. Learning basic hand tool woodwork. Introduction of Wood Lathe. All areas optional for the student.

Group 2 - Hand Tool Woodwork and Lathe
   
Project  Each student will learn the correct use of hand tools, construct a project in wood and master basic Wood Lathe skills.

  Requirements
    • All students must be accompanied to the Sign In/Out desk by
  their parent or guardian.
• No student is to be dropped off in the parking area.
• All students must be picked up promptly at the end of the class.
• Each student must complete a Registration/Consent Form and Liability
  Release Form (see General Information to download these forms).

  Charter School Senior Projects
Ages 16-18


All Charter School seniors participating in this mentoring program will be evaluated by the Education Chairman and the Guild member assigned to mentor the student.  This will include evaluating the student’s ability and understanding of the project and any health or safety issues that could hinder completion of the project.

The Mentor will demonstrate and instruct on the proper and safe use and care of the tools, equipment and materials necessary to complete the project.

The student will demonstrate proper and safe use of all tools prior to use.

Parent or legal guardian and student will meet with the mentor to outline the woodworking project and detail how and when the project will be undertaken.

Requirements
• All students must be accompanied to the Sign In/Out desk by an adult.
• No student is to be dropped off in the parking area.
• All students must be picked up promptly at the end of the class.

Class dates and times to be determined by student and mentor.
Cost to be determined by student and mentor.
Positions are presently full for this school year.  (Post in capital letters)

Classroom Instruction will include discussion and demonstration in:
  • Shop Safety, Tool Safety and First Aid
  • Six Different Kinds of Wood
  • Care and Use of Basic Hand Tools
      – Chisels – bench, framing, mortise, carving
      – Saws – cross cut and rip
      – Planes – wood, transition, metal, molding
      – Drills – Brace and Bit, egg beater, machine, auger
      – Measurement and marking – rule, compass, marker knife
      – Sharpening
  • Sanding Skills and Techniques
  • Joinery – beveled, rounded, incised, dowel, mortise & tenon
  • Importance of Drawing
  Any or all of the above offerings may be deleted at the discretion of the GWG.

Each Student must have a completed Registration/Consent Form and Liability Release Form signed by his or her parent. (A Troop Leader's signature is not an acceptable substitute.) see "General Information" to download these forms).

All participants must adhere to the policies of the Greenville Woodworkers Guild at all times while on the grounds of the Education Center.

Each student must be in the company of a Scout Leader and/or parent/legal guardian at all times while on the grounds of the Education Center.
